Troops Out! Tour with Mark Steel and Ben Griffin
Council Chambers, Top Floor of the Students’ Union.
The occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan have caused great suffering for the people of those two countries. In Iraq, 655,000 civilians have died and 4 million have fled their homes. In Afghanistan, NATO regularly bombs civilian areas in their fight against a resurgent Taliban. The recent bombing of a school in which up to 70 people died prompted an outcry in Afghanistan, including from the President, Hamid Karzai.
The only end to these tragic wars is a complete withdrawal of troops. Not one more drop of blood should be spilt in these unpopular wars. The British army remain in Iraq to provide political support for George Bush as the war becomes increasingly unpopular in America.
BEN GRIFFIN is a former SAS soldier who served in Iraq and left the SAS in protest against the war. He is touring the country to talk about his experiences in Iraq, why he opposed the war, and why Britain lost.
MARK STEEL is a columnist for the Independent, a Radio 4 presenter and a comedian.
